Elephant and crocodile 'tug of war'

Posted on 12 November 2012 Elephant, Crocodile, Predator, Comments

You'd think a large elephant would be the one animal that's safe from the jaws of a crocodile. But it turns out Africa's top reptilian predators are not deterred by size. This elephant mom stopped for a drink by the Chobe River in Botswana and stepped straight into a nasty ambush.

Trunk injuries are relatively common in elephants, especially in young calves (and bites from crocs are actually not that rare – just take a look at this series of amazing photographs taken in Zambia in 2010). Depending on the severity of the injury, youngsters (like the little guy in this video) can recover and adapt to life with a less-than-perfect trunk.
