A trumpet call from the east signals the arrival of a massive elephant herd moving towards the floodplains in Botswana's Moremi Game Reserve.

Within the herd is a mother with a tiny calf - not more than a few weeks old! She's surprisingly relaxed despite the crew's presence - but she makes sure the youngster stays close...

The trunk is a tricky, muscle-packed appendage. Sensitive yet super-powerful, it's used for everything from dust baths to dominance displays. No wonder it takes a while to master.

A newborn weighs about 100 kilograms - which doesn't really sound very small ... until you compare the little tyke to its 3-tonne mama.
